What is power quality?

The IEC (1000-2-2/4) standard defines power quality as the physical characteristics of power supply devices that do not interrupt or interfere with users' use of power under normal working conditions. Strictly speaking, the main indicators to measure power quality are voltage, frequency and waveform. Generally speaking, it refers to high-quality power supply, including voltage quality, current quality, power supply quality and power consumption quality. Just as there are good and bad commodities, there is also a quality problem with the electric energy we usually use. High quality electric energy can not only reduce the loss of electrical appliances and lines, improve the use efficiency of electric energy, but also ensure the stable and healthy operation of the power system, thus greatly reducing the related indirect risks and losses.

Types and hazards of power quality problems

The power quality problem can be defined as the deviation of voltage, current or frequency that causes the failure or abnormal operation of electric equipment. The common power quality problems in China's power applications are mainly considered in seven aspects. Voltage quality includes: voltage deviation, voltage flicker and fluctuation, voltage sag and interruption, frequency deviation; Current quality: harmonic and interharmonic, three-phase imbalance, low power factor.

Power quality problems can cause many hazards, such as abnormal operation of equipment, waste products, computer reset, data loss, equipment efficiency reduction, life reduction, overheating, burning, power factor reduction, equipment capacity reduction, power loss increase, pay more electricity bills, etc. If a computing center loses power for 2s, it may destroy dozens of hours of data processing results and cause millions of yuan of economic losses. In large machine manufacturing plants, a sudden voltage drop of 0.1s may cause abnormal production conditions and quality damage. Today's continuous finishing production lines controlled by automatic equipment are extremely sensitive to interference in the power distribution system. Abnormal power supply for a fraction of a second may cause chaos in the factory, and its loss is incalculable. The same is true of modern business centers, banks and hospitals. The serious harm and loss caused by harmonics are often mentioned, and the sudden crash of computer systems in unattended substations is mostly a power quality problem. For users, the power factor, harmonic and other parameters of electricity will also affect the power quality of the whole grid, causing the decline of the power quality of the whole grid and endangering the safety of users. For this reason, the power department has stipulated the reward and punishment standards for the power factor of users: users whose power factor is lower than 0.9 will be punished. The more lower the power factor is, the more severe the punishment will be. Users whose power factor is higher than 0.95 will be rewarded.
